Static and Dynamic Soil Probing

Back to services

Soil probing measures the strength of soil layers quickly, without taking samples, and gives a continuous profile down to the required depth.

What we do

We push or drive a probe into the ground and record the resistance at every few centimetres. The results help choose the foundation type and check the bearing capacity of existing soils.

  • Static cone penetration testing (CPT) with pore pressure measurement (CPTu)
  • Dynamic probing, light and heavy, for granular and mixed soils
  • Continuous soil profiles with calculated strength parameters
  • Probing around existing foundations and compaction control

Methods and equipment

  • Hydraulic CPT rig on a truck or tracked base
  • Dynamic probing rigs (DPL and DPH)
  • Data logging with on-site interpretation
  • Correlation with local laboratory results
Field crew drilling in snowy open terrain
Field worker with a long survey instrument in open terrain

Typical scope

MethodDepthOutput
Static CPTUp to 30 mCone resistance, sleeve friction, pore pressure
Dynamic probing, light (DPL)Up to 10 mBlow count per 10 cm
Dynamic probing, heavy (DPH)Up to 20 mBlow count per 10 cm
Output per day3 to 6 CPT soundings or 8 to 12 DPL probesDepends on depth and soil

Deliverables

  1. CPT and probing logs
  2. Soil layer profile with strength parameters
  3. Foundation options and recommended design values

Typical timeline

A site with 10 to 20 soundings takes 2 to 4 days in the field and about one week for processing and the report.
